PROTECT WHAT YOU OWN
Bullion Storage & Handling
Buying physical gold and silver is only the beginning. Proper storage and careful handling can help protect the condition, appearance, security, and long-term value of your bullion.
For Filipino bullion owners, proper storage deserves extra attention. The Philippines has a tropical, humid, and rainy climate, which means moisture, heat, fingerprints, environmental contaminants, and improper packaging can affect the appearance of coins and bars over time. Gold is highly resistant to tarnish, but silver and copper are much more reactive.
At One Ounce Trading, we regularly see customers place importance on condition and protection. Buyers request capsules, official tubes, careful bubble wrapping, discreet packaging, tracked and insured shipping, and sometimes personal pickup so they can inspect their items. This is especially important for limited-mintage, collectible, proof, and premium bullion products where scratches, dents, fingerprints, damaged packaging, or toning may affect collector appeal.

01
Handle as Little as Possible
The safest way to handle bullion is often not to handle it unnecessarily. Gold is a relatively soft metal, and polished or proof surfaces can easily pick up fingerprints, hairline scratches, or marks.
02
Hold Coins by the Edge
Avoid touching the front or back surface of a coin. Hold it gently around the edge using clean hands or lint-free cotton gloves.
03
Keep Bullion Dry
Humidity is one of the biggest concerns in the Philippines. Store metals in a cool, dry environment away from damp areas, bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and locations prone to flooding.
04
Do Not Clean Collectible Coins
Cleaning can permanently alter a coin’s original surface. Even gentle polishing may create fine scratches or remove natural toning that some collectors value.
HANDLING
How to Handle Gold and Silver Properly
If you need to remove bullion from its capsule or packaging, prepare a clean, soft surface first. A microfiber cloth or clean towel can reduce the chance of damage if a coin or bar slips from your hand.
The Royal Mint recommends handling gold only when necessary, placing it over a soft surface, wearing cotton lint-free gloves, and holding coins around the edge rather than touching the obverse or reverse surfaces. It also advises against latex gloves because substances used in some latex products can affect the metal. Source: The Royal Mint
One Ounce Tip: If your coin arrives in an original mint capsule, assay card, Safepack, tube, or sealed packaging, consider leaving it there. Original packaging can help protect the piece and may also matter to future collectors.
CAPSULES & TUBES

Use Proper Bullion Storage Products
Individual coin capsules are one of the easiest ways to protect coins from fingerprints, dust, scratches, and direct contact with environmental contaminants.
For larger quantities, original mint tubes or high-quality bullion tubes make stacking and organisation easier while reducing unnecessary handling. Many One Ounce Trading customers purchase coins with capsules or official tubes for exactly this reason.
Coin Capsules
Best for individual coins, premium bullion, proof coins, and collectible pieces.
Mint Tubes
Ideal for stackers holding multiple coins of the same size or series.
Assay Packaging
Keep sealed gold bars in their original assay card or manufacturer packaging whenever practical.
PHILIPPINE CLIMATE
Humidity Matters
PAGASA describes the Philippines as having high temperatures, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Average monthly relative humidity can range from roughly 71% to 85%. For bullion owners, this makes moisture control particularly important, especially for silver, copper, paper packaging, certificates, and boxes.
Consider using a dry storage area and appropriate moisture-control products such as silica gel packs inside the storage container or safe. Replace or regenerate them as required.
SILVER
Silver Can Tarnish — and That Is Normal
Silver reacts with elements in the surrounding environment and may gradually develop toning or tarnish. This does not mean the silver is fake, damaged internally, or no longer contains its stated metal content.
The Royal Mint notes that tarnishing and toning are natural processes influenced heavily by the environment in which a coin is stored. Attempting to remove tarnish can alter the surface of the coin, which is why cleaning is generally discouraged for collectible pieces. Source: The Royal Mint
Important: Milk spots, toning, small marks, or natural changes in appearance do not necessarily affect the underlying silver content of bullion. However, condition can matter more for collectible or premium products.
GOLD
Gold Needs Protection Too
Gold does not normally tarnish like silver, but pure gold is soft. This means scratches, dents, and surface marks can occur if bars or coins are dropped, rubbed together, or repeatedly removed from their packaging.
Small minted gold bars should generally remain in their original assay packaging or manufacturer Safepack where applicable. Avoid bending, cutting, opening, or damaging sealed packaging unless there is a specific reason to do so.
COPPER
Copper Requires Extra Care
Copper reacts readily with air, moisture, fingerprints, and environmental contaminants. It can develop darker colouring, spotting, or patina more quickly than gold or silver.
Because many One Ounce Trading copper rounds and bars are also purchased for their artwork and collectibility, storing them inside capsules, sleeves, or protective packaging can help preserve their appearance.
Collector Tip: Avoid repeatedly removing copper rounds from their capsules. Fingerprints may become visible over time and can be difficult to remove without altering the surface.
HOME STORAGE
If You Store Bullion at Home
Home storage gives you direct access to your physical metals, but it also means you are responsible for security, environmental protection, and insurance.
✓ Use a secure safe appropriate for the value and quantity of bullion you hold.
✓ Keep the storage area dry and away from damp, excessive heat, and flood-prone areas.
✓ Avoid unnecessarily telling people where your bullion is stored.
✓ Check whether your home insurance actually covers precious metals and collectibles.
✓ Maintain an inventory of your holdings, invoices, serial numbers, photographs, certificates, and purchase records.

After opening, check the items against your invoice and order details. Confirm the correct product, quantity, packaging, capsules, and condition as soon as possible.
One Ounce Trading uses secure order preparation and offers tracked and insured shipping options for eligible orders. Customers who prefer to personally inspect their items may also schedule pickup where available.
